A Hedley (Motor Engineers)

After more than five decades of continuous trading, A Hedley (Motor Engineers) Limited has entered a new phase, with the long-standing County Durham garage now under new ownership.

Operating from County Durham, the business has built its reputation since 1971 by delivering a broad mix of MOT testing, servicing, repairs and bodywork for cars and light commercial vehicles. Its ability to handle everything from routine maintenance through to more complex work has helped establish a dependable and well-regarded presence within the local market.

That position has been reinforced by an experienced team of eight, supported by a General Manager overseeing day-to-day operations. With minimal reliance on formal marketing, the business has grown largely through repeat custom and referrals, creating a steady workflow and long-standing relationships with both private and trade customers.

With retirement in mind, Ian Smith brought the business to market. Led by Operations Manager Sara Manville, the process identified a buyer aligned with the company’s operational model and future potential, resulting in a smooth and timely transaction.

The acquirer, Longford Alpha, is a Gloucestershire-based investment vehicle led by Ricky Ashworth, with a focus on acquiring and developing established engineering and automotive businesses. A Hedley represents a natural fit, offering a proven trading platform with scope to build further through additional resource and targeted development.

The structure of the deal sees the business continue operating from its existing premises under a rental arrangement with the seller, maintaining continuity for customers while providing a stable base for future growth.

We wish Ian a very happy retirement, and every success to Longford Alpha as they take the business forward.
