Reproduction Framing & Mirrors

After more than four decades building a highly specialised craft business, the owner of Reproduction Framing & Mirrors has completed a successful sale, marking the next stage for the Somerset-based company.

The business produces bespoke, hand-crafted frames and mirrors using traditional Victorian and Georgian methods. Its work has been commissioned by prestigious clients including English Heritage sites, with projects delivered for locations such as Bentley Priory Museum in London, Blaise Castle in Bristol and Lewis Castle in Stornoway.

Melvin Edwards, who acquired the business in 1980, has operated as a sole artisan for nearly 45 years, developing a distinctive offering supported by a unique collection of antique moulding blocks, designs and techniques.

Over that time, the business has also produced work for the Fantastic Beasts film series, further reflecting the quality and detail of its craftsmanship.

A defining feature of the business is its use of traditional materials and methods, including Swedish pine and gesso-on-timber techniques — a rare skillset that places it within a highly specialised niche, with only a small number of comparable operators in the UK.

Despite minimal marketing, the business has continued to generate consistent demand through referrals and repeat customers. The process, led by Deal Executive Karen Clarke, highlighted clear opportunities for growth under new ownership, including expanding its online presence, product range and retail visibility.

The business was ultimately acquired by investor James Barrett as he enters the sector, with a structured handover agreed to ensure continuity. This includes one-to-one training and the transfer of detailed handwritten manuals, designs and processes developed over decades.

Following completion, Melvin has stepped away from the business to begin his retirement. The Knightsbridge team wishes him all the best and looks forward to seeing Reproduction Framing & Mirrors continue under its new ownership.
